CS Video: The Cast and Director of Dallas Buyers Club
October 29, 2013
Actors often talk about transformative roles and in Dallas Buyers Club, there are two such performances on display by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, that will amaze and impress fans of the two actors.
The film is based on the true story of McConaughey's Ron Woodroof, a hard-partying homophobic rodeo worker who is diagnosed HIV positive in the late ‘80s, having contracted it from having unprotected sex, and he's given 30 days to live. Ron realizes that there are a lot of drugs with potential to ease his health problems that are not being approved by the FDA so he begins to illegally smuggle them in from Mexico. From there, he begins a distribution network to get these medications to HIV-infected men who need them—the Dallas Buyers Club. While being treated, Ron meets Leto's Rayon, a flamboyant transgender junkie also facing the advent of AIDS, and she becomes his assistant in the endeavor, plus he eventually gains the support of his primary physician, Dr. Eve Saks, played by the always wonderful Jennifer Garner.
Beyond losing dozens of pounds for each of their roles, the performances by McConaughey and Leto have been generating awards buzz ever since the film premiered at this year's Toronto International Film Festival in September and that's when ComingSoon.net had a chance to sit down with the cast and with French-Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée (The Young Victoria) to talk about the movie.
We mainly spoke to the three actors and Vallée about their decision to make a movie potentially outside their comfort zones with McConaughey and Leto taking on roles that required so much extra research and effort to make their characters believable.
Dallas Buyers Club opens in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, November 1 and will expand into more cities nationwide on November 22.
