There was no stopping Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity
, as the space thriller defied second weekend box office drops and took in another $44.3 million in first place! That means the film, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, dipped just 20.7% in ticket sales. The Warner Bros. release has reached $123.4 million at the domestic box office and has surpassed the $190 million mark worldwide. Gravity
earned a strong $9 million from 278 IMAX theaters (20+% of the $44.3 million) in which it has reached a total of $26.5 million domestically and $33.3 million worldwide. The movie was made for about $100 million.
The new Paul Greengrass thriller Captain Phillips
, starring Tom Hanks, got off to a great start with an estimated $26 million from 3,020 theaters in second place. Columbia Pictures expected the movie, produced for $55 million, to make about $19 million this weekend. Captain Phillips
is playing in 45 IMAX theaters, where it earned $450,000 this weekend. The film received an A CinemaScore from audiences.
Sony Pictures Animation's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
dropped a spot to third with $14.2 million for a three-week total of $78 million. The animated sequel cost $78 million to make.
Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills
debuted in fourth place but managed to bring in just $3.8 million from 2,538 theaters. Featuring a big cast that includes Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Carlos Estevez, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding, Jr., William Sadler, Marko Zaror and Mel Gibson, the film received a B- CinemaScore.
Rounding out the top five was 20th Century Fox's Runner Runner
, which added $3.7 million its second weekend for a total of $14.1 million. Starring Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck and Gemma Arterton, the film was made for $30 million.
Moviegoers were not interested in Relativity's new Romeo & Juliet
movie, starring Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth. The film earned just $509,000 from 461 theaters.
