Still No Green Light for Third Narnia?
Source: Walden Media
November 14, 2008
On Friday, Walden Media announced that Co-CEO and co-founder Cary Granat was exiting the company. One thing we noticed in the press release, however, was that The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has not yet gotten the green light:
Cary Granat, Co-CEO and co-founder of Walden Media, will transition from his Walden position to a consultant for the company effective December 1. Granat will be Walden's creative consultant on the third installment in "The Chronicles of Narnia" franchise – "Voyage of the Dawn Treader"- which the company hopes to greenlight soon. He will also provide consulting services for an initiative with AEG Live, the concert and promotion company owned by Phil Anschutz who also owns Walden.
"This was a mutual decision," said David Weil, CEO of Anschutz Film Group, Walden’s parent company. "Cary and we both felt this was the right way to formalize the change in the company's creative direction that will now be overseen by Michael Bostick who was brought in as Co-CEO of Walden earlier this year. We all owe Cary a great debt of gratitude for co-founding the company and guiding the Walden brand to its preeminent place in family entertainment today."
"I'm extremely proud of what we've accomplished in my seven years at Walden. We have been very fortunate, with the unparalleled support of Phil Anschutz, David Weil and the entire team here to create family entertainment that will last for generations. It's time for me to hit the recharge button and take on a new challenge, but I'll always look back fondly on my time at Walden."
Granat will not be replaced and his responsibilities at Walden will now be handled by Weil and Bostick. Granat expects to announce additional future plans shortly.
Disney was targeting a May 7, 2010 release date for the third installment.

I hope this is the last....not because they're bad...but because the rest of the books would not make good movies.

rest of the book will make great movies

The Silver Chair is my favorite of the BBC productions so I don't think they should stop short of it. The others WOULD be a challenge, especially The Last Battle.
However, I don't think they've captured the spirit of the books in these films, though they have been well-made. If they peter out sooner than later it may open the door for a different team down the line. A welcome change in my book.

I'm glad there's no green light, Narnia sucks.

Good, the last movie was boring

The first was great, the 2nd was eh. I think with a new creative direction the rest of the movies can be successes.

I know they won't do that, but I do hope they cancel that piece of christian propaganda s**t disguised as family flicks. I mean, in the stupid books one of the girls goes to hell because she discoveted her sexuallity and the enemies are black and middle west..what the hell?!

WTF?? come on already! Green light it! Voyage is my favorite book in the series!

"I mean, in the stupid books one of the girls goes to hell because she discoveted her sexuallity and the enemies are black and middle west..what the hell?! "
I haven't read the books in a while, but do you mind telling me which book and who that was?
And just because it has Christian elements doesn't mean it's Christian propaganda. They're good stories and as long as they are I don't even care if they ARE Christian propaganda. And I'm Christian.
They better greenlight it. I want VotDT and The Magician's Nephew made (with Tilda Swinton!). The rest weren't all that great, but these two books were just awesome.

nowhere in the books does it say that Susan was sent to hell, as a matter of fact in a letter written to a fan by c.s.lewis he said that susan's story wasn't over yet. Alsan said in the first movie once a king or queen of narnia, always a king or queen of narnia why would he say that if susan wasn't to stay a friend of narnia? To me prince caspian was one of the best movies of '07 along with the dark knight. I'm excited to see all the books made into movies.

I'm with Jimmy; I've wanted to see a movie of "The Magician's Nephew" since I was a kid. That one's my favorite of them all.

the second one was OK but if they would have released it in December it would have made SO MUCH MORE MONEY

Timing is everything...releasing the Narnia films around Christmas like the Lord of the Rings flicks would have earned Prince Caspian more moolah, in my opinion, epecially since the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe established itself as money-making Happy Holidays flick.

Agreed, the summer was full already, they should have waited (although i'm sure they didn't want to compete with Harry Potter, who ironically ended up being pushed back...bummer, cause Prince Caspian would have ate up all that audience base).

Cause the first and second ones were pretty average.

I want a complete series. I hope they'll adapt all 7 books. The Magician's Nephew would be awesome on film.

I's so easy guys...the answer I mean. They are wainting for the DVD release, they want to see who PC will do o DVD and BLU-RAY.If it does good,we will see in 2010 VotDT;if not...GOOD BYE NARNIA!!
Posted by: Vorthrox on November 15, 2008 at 04:54:02
they want to see how...sorry :))

I agree with the sentiment that "The Silver Chair" is highly adaptable. I would also say "The Magician's Nephew" might be worth exploring, but certainly "The Last Battle" is nigh unfilmable.

Please make the sequels!

maybe it's just me, but The Horse and His Boy was always my fav...i really want to see that one...as to Christian propaganda, it's good to see something decent and morally based in a fully funded movie. Christian's have Narnia, and atheists have The Golden Compass. stop whining, Bob. ( oh, and by the way, the enemies were just supposed to symbolize foreign religions, which explains the color difference...Lewis lived in a time where people weren't so sensitive to race issues.)

While the Narnia series is based on the Chriistian mythos, it's far from heavy handed. I'm not a big fan of hiding religious propaganda in children's films (morality, yes, but not religion), I think that the books (and the movies) are pretty inoffensive. Yes, the Telamrines were the dark ones from across the ocean, but you notice that Prince Caspian was the true King of Narnia. There was hardly a religious conversion there. Mostly, they are just highly imaginative fantasy stories with a reasonable message (though a rather high violence quotient). I hope that they make the whole series (even if the last book does make clear the Christian ideology). I'd be great to have the set on film in a proper way.

I dont think the other books will work because I dont think the two younger children can carry the franchise along with the bland prince casbian they casted.

I have a hope.Narnia lives forever.
