Pre-production is about to get under way on The Hobbit and its sequel, says Variety.

Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are expected to write the scripts under the direction of Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro. Preliminary contact has already been made with at least three actors whose "Lord of the Rings" characters also appear in the "Hobbit" storyline: Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum).

"We will all be involved in the script in some fashion but the exact definition is about a week away, " said del Toro. "I am all for keeping the actors who originated the parts, as much as availability and their willingness will allow."

Del Toro will also be producing Hater with Mark Johnson for Universal Pictures. Based on David Moody's 2006 novel, the thriller is about an epidemic of random violence in which ordinary people strike lethally without warning or remorse. The book will be adapted for the screen by Glen Mazzara (FX's "The Shield").

I imagine Viggo is for Hobbit 2 kinda showing Strider and Elrond and Gandalfs bond. I mean Viggo probbly do a whole movie on his character of Aragorn alone

Besides the great effects, the extraordinary music and the excellent direction of JACKSON..one thing that the LOTR became a instant classic was the amazing cast... so i think this new trilogy is not the exception.

Aragorn wasn't in The Hobbit. I hate how they change things for movies. Adding in the elf chick in the LOTR movies was dumb, too.

I want Guillermo Del Toro to do a dark remake of 'Forbidden Planet'. That is my dream project.

No, Aragorn was not in The Hobbit, but his story line occurs while The Hobbit goes on, leading me to believe that his story is what the second movie will be mostly about.

Aragorn would have been a small child in Rivendell during the events of The Hobbit, being 87 during the events of The Lord of the Rings. I don't know how they will work the character in. Legolas could have a place in the movie, being the son of King Thranduil of Mirkwood, who imprisons the dwarves in the crossing of said forest. I'm still really looking forward to this film, and its sequel, which could possibly be the one Aragorn appears in.
