Guillermo del Toro on The Hobbit

April 14, 2008

On April 2nd, Guillermo del Toro posted the following regarding The Hobbit and its sequel on the official message boards for Hellboy II: The Golden Army:

Whew- Not yet. BUT there has been a lot of movement. And for the last few weeks there has been a lot of creative / cast / crew / visual talks and agreements and we have witnessed great progress in areas that I cannot disclose or that have already leaked from other sources.

I am dying to share news but I have to be patient and wait until the papers are done and my attachment is real. Nevertheless- a LOT of progress in defining the films, their cast and crew. And, may I add, we are all happily in synch about all creative aspects so far and all willing and eager to move forth.

I cannot say more but if all's well the time will come To talk of many things: Of shoes -- and ships -- and sealing wax -- Of cabbages -- and kings --

May Luck be with us

GDT

PD my silnece means nothing more than the fact that we are RUNNING against an impossible deadline on the HBII film, poster, campaign, ADR, VFX, etc I am SWAMPED.

BUT- Expect good things in the next 2 weeks and a nice item at COMICON. See you there-

New Line Cinema is planning a 2010 release for the first "Hobbit" film and a 2011 release for the second.

What does this mean for At The Mountains of Madness? I'm dying to see Guillermo take that on. Much more than The Hobbit. Maybe he's doing something as commercially guaranteed as The Hobbit, to gain the leverage needed to produce the bleak Mountain of Madness?

I'm still not convinced that GDT can pull off The Hobbit to fan expectations. His style is vastly different from Jackson's. I'm waiting for Hellboy II to make my final call on that one. I truly do wish him the best of luck on both movies, though. I really hope he turns The Hobbit into a work of art like LOTR was.

Wayward: I wouldn't look to the hellboy movies for reference of GDT's true style. He's very flexible in style actually. Watch The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth for a true definition of GDT-ness.
That being said, the fact that Jackson is executive producing it puts my mind at ease the rest of the way. :)

what exactly needs to be worked out between GDT, MGM and WB/NL? I know there's all sorts of legal problems know with the Tolkien estate and what not, but I mean, what are they doing? Are they trying to agree how much to pay him and what the budget is? Usually with these sorts of things, studios are in hurry to make sure everyone knows who is directing their big tentpoles.

anyway, hope all works out and he gets the job. and that the needed cast will be around to reprise their roles.

You know I was really excited that he was at one point attched to "DEADMAN" stoked really.

Then this...

So I here I hope that he'll still get on with "DEADMAN" then maybe follow up with "SWAMPTHING"

I think this guy doing a "SWAMPTHING movie would really, Rule the Roost!

Del Tora is a better director than Jackson is when it comes to fantasy. Like most of us, I have seen Blade 2 a hundred times but, I have only seen King Kong once. Don't get me wrong Jackson is a genius and it is kind of like comparing Coppola versus Scorsese.

The Fellowship of the Rings was the best out of the trilogy and I was a little disappointed with the sequels since they did not seem as personal. Plus, TFOTR had more time for the Elves which are my favorite.

I hope that Del Toro brings back the personal emotion that was in TFOTR. Blade 2 kicked ass and was as cool as hell so, I am hoping Del Toro adds some of that coolness hipness while still of course staying true to the mythology.

Funny, many have questioned the credibility and talent of Peter Jackson whose previous works before LOTR has shown no hints that he is the right person to steer the LOTR ship and its epic future, besides his unbridled enthusiasm for the books. Yep, I remember the naysayers' doubts and negative criticism. And here we are again...now Guillermo del Toro is taking the helm. If passion is the only way to judge a person's commitment and creative drive for the project, then Guillermo del Toro is in good company with Peter Jackson. Guillermo will do just fine, and the movies will be a classic, regardless of the naysayers 'Nuff said.
