Synopsis:
The following is the description from the DVD cover:

"Everyone's favorite killer doll returns - as the Chucky legacy continues with the introduction of an all-new family member! This time around, Chucky (voiced again by Brad Dourif) and his homicidal honey, Tiffany, are brought back to life by their orphan offspring, Glen. Then, the outrageous action goes Hollywood, as Chucky and his bride take Tinseltown by storm, unleashing a wild new rampage of murderous mayhem! Featuring Academy Award nominee Jennifer Tilly (as herself and the voice of Tiffany) and hip-hop star Redman, it's all about family values, Chucky-style!"

Seed of Chucky is rated R for strong horror violence/gore, sexual content and language.

The Movie:
I don't think I've seen a Chucky movie since the original Child's Play from 1988. My viewing of Seed of Chucky (the fifth film) is my first taste of the series since then. I'm not a big fan of horror movies, but Seed of Chucky was a bit different than I was expecting. It falls more into the genre of horror comedy rather than horror. In fact, there's almost more comedy than horror.

Seed of Chucky is a lot like Scream 2 in that there's a movie within a movie. Jennifer Tilly actually plays herself in the film. She's playing a role in a Chucky movie based on the killer doll urban legend and she ultimately gets terrorized by the real dolls. In fact, Tilly playing herself ends up making this film better than average. She makes fun of herself at every turn and it's quite funny. She also takes a number of shots at Hollywood along the way which are amusing. It ends up being quite a turn for the franchise, but a good one.

The other new feature of Seed of Chucky is the introduction of Glen/ Glenda (a blatant reference to the Ed Wood film). He/She is voiced by Billy Boyd. He costarred with Chucky voice actor Brad Dourif in the Lord of the Rings films. (Quite a change of pace for them!) Glen is a bit of a wimp and a goody two shoes, so he's a great contrast to the serial killer Chucky. His gender confusion and attack of conscience about his parent's murdering spree provide a lot of the humor of the film.

Like you would expect, there's a lot of sexual humor and gore in Seed of Chucky. If you're into that sort of thing, then you'll probably enjoy Seed of Chucky. However, it isn't really my sort of entertainment, so I wasn't as enthralled with it as horror fans will be. I enjoyed the comedy more than the gore.

That being said, I think Seed of Chucky should please fans of the series. It's a new take on the character, but one that fits the spirit of a movie about a serial killer Cabbage Patch Kid. (Fans may also want to note that there's an unrated version of this movie out there for purchase.)

The Extras:
There are a fair number of bonus features on this DVD. Here are the highlights:

Family Hell-iday Slideshow – Chucky, Tiffany, and Glen sit down and watch slides from their family vacation. They make jokes along the way as you discover that Chucky killed someone at every stop on their cross country trip.

Audio Commentary with Writer-Director Don Mancini and Actress Jennifer Tilly – The DVD I was sent for review didn't include the commentary, so I can't comment on it.

Conceiving the Seed of Chucky – This is your standard 'making of' feature. It goes into detail about the animatronic puppets and how they work. It also shows interviews with the cast and crew as well as an interview with Chucky, Tiffany, and Glen in character. You also see bits of them filming in Romania.

Tilly on The Tonight Show – This is the funniest of the bonus features in my opinion. It shows Tilly arriving in Romania and getting a rather un-glamorous treatment there. Tilly is shown clowning around town and on the set.

Jennifer Tilly's Diary – The DVD I was sent didn't contain this bonus feature, so I can't comment on it.

FuZion Up Close with the Seed of Chucky Stars – This seems to be a generic Telemundo entertainment show. They feature interviews with Tilly, Chucky, and Tiffany.

The Bottom Line:
Seed of Chucky is an amusing horror comedy that should please fans of the franchise. Jennifer Tilly is quite funny as she spoofs herself and Hollywood.
