This film was originally released in 1942 and is based on the book by Felix Salten. The following is from the Blu-ray cover:
"For the first time ever, the wonder, music and majesty of one of Walt Disney's greatest triumphs comes alive in glorious detail through the magic of Blu-ray™ high definition! Now 'Bambi,' Walt Disney's beloved coming-of-age story, will thrill a new generation of fans with its breathtakingly beautiful animation, soaring music and characters who will touch your hear: Bambi, the wide-eyed fawn, his playful pal Thumper, the loveable skunk Flower and wise Friend Owl. Plus, all-new immersive game and special features that reveal the extraordinary creative process behind the making of this timeless classic take you deeper into Bambi's world than ever before!
Walt Disney's 'Bambi' is an experience you will never forget, now more brilliant than ever on Blu-ray™!”
Bambi is rated G.
"Bambi" is the latest Disney Classic to get the Blu-ray treatment. And like with their previous Blu-rays, they do a fantastic job with it. Needless to say, the picture and sound are better than ever. The movie probably hasn't looked this good since the animation cells were originally painted and photographed.
On the bonus features, Disney continues to do something I really appreciate - they include the bonus features from the previous DVD releases. This is great for collectors such as myself because I can now get rid of those old DVD's and feel like I still have every bonus feature ever made. It frees up shelf space. And for new collectors they can get everything in one purchase rather than having to track down old DVDs.
But there are new bonus features on this Blu-ray, too. Most notable is "Inside Walt's Story Meetings: Enhanced Interactive Edition." When this is turned on, the movie plays in the background while production art, photos, and other "Bambi" making-of photos are shown. It also turns out that Disney made transcripts of all of their original production meetings. Those transcripts are read with actors and you end up hearing the creative process behind many of the iconic scenes of the movie as it plays. It's really interesting for Disney fans as well as any aspiring filmmaker.
This Blu-ray also has a new feature entitled "Disney Second Screen." The way this works is you have an iPad or other device connect via an app to your Blu-ray player. Then, as the movie plays, various bonus features play on the iPad in your hands. There are 'making-of' featurettes, games for kids, and other cool stuff. I was skeptical at first, but after having seen the demo on the Blu-ray I see how this could be a potentially cool bonus feature. Now I just need to buy an iPad.
Rounding out the bonus features are a couple of deleted scenes and the full deleted song entitled "Twitterpated" is performed. One of the deleted scenes shows the last two leaves of the fall clinging onto the tree like an old married couple lamenting the last days of their lives. It's really, really depressing and probably wisely deleted from the film. Also look for a sticker book game, an introduction by Disney historian Diane Disney Miller, and some galleries.
If you already own "Bambi" on DVD, go ahead and get rid of it and buy this Blu-ray. If you don't already own it, this is a great addition to your kids' Blu-ray collection.
