Life is full of hilarious adventures until Copper is expected to take on his role as a hunting dog -- and the object of his search is his best friend! "The Fox and the Hound" is rated G.
I remember seeing "The Fox and the Hound" in theaters as a kid. It was light entertainment, but certainly not what I would call a Disney Classic. But even being 8 years old, I remember the film being a thinly veiled commentary on prejudice and race relations. There's nothing subtle about this movie.
While most Disney movies entertained me as both a kid and adult, I find I have very little interest in "The Fox and the Hound" now. The animation isn't nearly the same quality of their later pictures. The film also follows a number of Disney clichés. And the extremely cute puppy and young fox are almost too much to take. But what did surprise me were the number of recognizable names in the cast. It includes Kurt Russell, Andy Rooney, Sandy Duncan, Corey Feldman, Pearl Bailey, and Jack Albertson (from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" or "Chico and the Man," take your pick). Before getting this DVD I never would have been able to name the cast to you.
"The Fox and the Hound" is decent enough entertainment for kids, but it's a shame that it was released right alongside "The Little Mermaid." The quality of "Mermaid" really exposes the weaknesses of this film.
There's very little here in the way of bonus features. The 'making of' video is short and mainly features Disney animators talking about how this was a stepping stone between the old Disney animation and the 'Golden Age' heralded by "The Little Mermaid." You''l also find a couple of games for kids including a game of hide and seek and a read along book. There's also an art gallery, a sing along, and two classic Disney shorts - "Lambert the Sheepish Lion" And "Lend a Paw."
