"Lost: The Complete Second Season - The Extended Experience" is rated TV-14.
After seeing the first season of "Lost" on DVD, my wife and I were hooked on the show. We followed the second season religiously and saw all but one of the episodes when they first aired. Like any TV series, it had its highs and lows, but overall it was a very satisfying season. Not only did the second season answer many of the mysteries from the first season, but it opened up a whole new set of mysteries to continue to intrigue viewers. (Unfortunately, I can't get into details without ruining many of the surprises.) I was also amazed to see that the creators were able to introduce a whole new group of characters and make them as intriguing as the more established characters. There are the Others who antagonize our heroes from the shadows as well as the "Tailies", survivors from the tail section of the airplane crash. (And going into season three, it looks like there are going to be a lot more characters introduced as well.) The creators have done a great job of sticking to the formula - introducing mystery upon mystery, putting the characters in real jeopardy (to the point of death), and continuing to interweave the pasts of the characters through flashbacks and bizarre coincidences. Overall, I'm very much on board for the third season.
There's a pretty good selection of bonus features on this DVD. You'll find a couple of new flashbacks featuring Locke at his father's funeral and Shannon at her father's funeral. You also see Shannon interviewing to be an au pair. There are also about 14 deleted scenes. Most are very minor and not missed at all from the show. A few of them feature Libby and show her interacting more with some of the other characters, including Hurley. In "Lost" on Location, a number of the episodes have 'making of' features where you see interviews with the cast and crew, behind the scenes footage, and more. Another cool bonus feature is "Fire + Water" which follows an episode from early script writing all the way through shooting and post-production. You really get a feel for how much work goes into every episode and you start being a little more understanding about all those repeat episodes (which was probably one of the goals of this bonus feature). You'll also find a featurette on the making of the Hatch, another on the theories behind the mysteries of the show by fans and cast members, a blooper reel, a compilation of Sawyer's insults, and a game showing the connections between all the characters through their flashbacks. There's also a very bizarre Channel 4 promo commercial for "Lost" directed by David LaChapelle that looks like a perfume commercial. Each of the characters is shown disheveled and dancing while saying, "One of us is a murderer, one of us is a cop, etc etc etc." It's weird but fun to see. While snooping around I found an Easter Egg featurette where they described how they made Dharma Oreos for one episode. I just wish they had included a printout of the blacklight map seen on the wall of the Hatch. It was cool to see in Entertainment Weekly, but it would have been a nice DVD addition.
