HBO Entertainment has announced that it has renewed its hit series "Girls" for a third season of 12 episodes. The first two seasons (the second of which just premiered this month) both consist of 10 episodes.

Created by and starring Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture), "Girls" takes a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of four girls in their early 20s. The show recently received two Golden Globes, for Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical (Dunham); last September, "Girls" won an Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series.

In addition to Dunham, "Girls" stars Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, Adam Driver and Alex Karpovsky. Dunham is also an executive producer alongside Judd Apatow, Jenni Konner, Ilene S. Landress and Bruce Eric Kaplan.
