J.J. Abrams Screens Star Trek Into Darkness for Dying Fan

Eight days ago, a user on Reddit (via Yahoo!) posted a story about his dear friend, a lifelong Trekkie named Dan, who has been diagnosed with two forms of cancer. Dan and his wife went to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hoping to see the Star Trek Into Darkness prologue, but unfortunately it wasn't screened with the show they saw. Not long after this, Dan's doctors gave him just a few weeks left to live.

It didn't take long for this online post to catch fire and it eventually got the attention of Star Trek director J.J. Abrams. As a result, Abrams set up a screening for Dan and his wife. The couple were hoping to see the prologue but were delighted to find out they were getting to see the entire film.

"Hi everyone, it's Daniel's wife, we are of course sworn to secrecy, BUT we are officially allowed to say we saw it and we enjoyed it IMMENSELY as a film and as a gesture...We were so touched when [Abrams] was concerned that we wouldn't 100% enjoy the screening as it's still being worked on....... Be assured we enjoyed it 110%!"

She went on to thank everyone involved and for everyone to remember the story as an example of giving during the holidays.

"This is a story of us giving something to him, the 'internet' community giving something to him and ultimately being a heartwarming gift to our friends, family and so many others. This story of us (and of course JJAbrams & Bad Robot) being able to give this surprise gift of a screening to a huge movie buff like Daniel, especially a film made by a film maker who obviously makes movies with such care, with a fan like Daniel in mind."
