Although the re-release had been officially announced earlier this year, 20th Century Fox has cancelled plans for Independence Day 3D.

The post-converted version of the 1996 film was intended to hit theaters on July 3, 2013. Starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and Randy Quaid, the Roland Emmerich film is a loose re-telling of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds." The sci-fi actioner grossed over $800 million worldwide in its original run.

What the cancellation means for the long rumored two-part sequel (tentatively titled ID Forever - Part I and ID Forever - Part II) remains to be seen.
