Box Office Results: Skyfall Opens Big Internationally, Argo is #1 Domestically

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.

While Hollywood experienced a weak weekend at the box office in North America, the 23rd James Bond adventure Skyfall took over international theaters and earned an impressive $77.7 million from 25 markets, opening in first place in each market. In the UK alone, the Sam Mendes-directed film opened to $32.4 million, which is the second-biggest opening weekend ever there, trailing only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2. The Columbia Pictures and MGM release, starring Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Dame Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw, will open in over 60 countries before it hits North American IMAX theaters on November 8 and conventional theaters on November 9.

Although there were four new releases domestically, none were able to top Argo's third weekend. The Warner Bros. film, directed by Ben Affleck, dropped just 25% in ticket sales and added $12.4 million for a total of $60.8 million so far. The thriller cost just $44.5 million to make.

Likewise, none of the new films were able to beat Sony Pictures Animation's Hotel Transylvania either. The animated comedy earned another $9.5 million in second place its fifth weekend and has reached $130.4 million.

Opening in a disappointing third place was Warner Bros.' Cloud Atlas, which was adapted and directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer. Said to have cost $100 million, the drama earned $9.4 million from 2,008 theaters, an average of $4,681 per location.

In its second weekend, Paranormal Activity 4 (Paramount) dropped a big 70.1% in ticket sales to add $8.7 million. Still, the supernatural thriller cost just $5 million to make and has already collected $42.6 million.

We'll have to wait until we get final numbers to see which film landed the fifth spot, as both Taken 2 (Twentieth Century Fox Film) and the new horror film Silent Hill: Revelation 3 (Open Road Films) are both reporting an estimate of $8 million. The former has earned $117.4 million after four weeks in theaters. The latter opened in 2,933 theaters and averaged just $2,728 per location.

Moviegoers were not very interested in the other two newcomers. Paramount's Fun Size, starring Victoria Justice and Jane Levy, debuted in tenth place with just $4.1 million from 3,014 theaters, while Fox's Chasing Mavericks, starring Gerard Butler, earned $2.2 million from 2,002 theaters.
