The Avengers Has Huge Debut on Blu-ray and DVD

October 4, 2012

After earning a massive $1.512 billion in theaters worldwide this summer, Marvel's The Avengers dominated the home video market last week.

According to Home Media Magazine, the Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment release "easily topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, as well as the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week ended Sept. 30."

They say that 72% of unit sales came in the Blu-ray format while 23% were from the 3D Blu-ray combo pack.

Marvel's The Avengers reportedly sold more than 34 times as many copies as the First Alert No. 2 title, Warner’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 1. That title also debuted at No. 2 on the Blu-ray chart, with 71% of its sales coming on the high-def format.

The success of The Avengers allowed the other Marvel titles to return to the First Alert Top 25 - Thor came in at No. 8, Captain America: The First Avenger at No. 13, Iron Man 2 at No. 14, The Incredible Hulk at No. 19 and Iron Man at No. 23. The films returned to the Top 20 Blu-ray chart as well.
