Tom Jenkins and Simon Sharp to Helm Giants

Tom Jenkins And Simon Sharp, best known for their short film work, are set to rewrite and direct Giants at Sony Pictures, Deadline reports.

The film follows a race of aliens who, not realizing that they're only 1/4 inch by human standards, set out to invade the planet Earth after a fallen screw from the Hubble Space Telescope makes them think their world is under attack. On Earth, the invaders wind up bonding with a young boy.

The description suggests a family-friendly approach to a popular science fiction theme, reversed in television series like "Land of the Giants" and in the famous "Twilight Zone" episode "The Invaders." There's also a similar gag in Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," which reads as follows:

"For thousands more years the mighty ships tore across the empty wastes of space and finally dived screaming on to the first planet they came across--which happened to be the Earth -- where due to a terribble miscalculation of scale the entire battle fleet was accidently swallowed by a small dog."

Check back for more on Giants as information becomes available.
