Gael Garcia Bernal Joins The Dallas Buyers Club

October 3, 2012

Gael Garcia Bernal is set to join Matthew McConaughy in the upcoming Jean-Marc Vallee project, The Dallas Buyers Club. The Hollywood Reporter has the news, also adding that the formerly-attached Hilary Swank will no longer be involved.

The Dallas Buyers Club tells the true story of Ron Woodroof, a tough Texas electrician who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986 and given six months to live. Frustrated with the lack of available medical options and unwilling to accept a death sentence, Woodroof found a lifeline using alternative drugs and created a lucrative smuggling business that made those drugs available to AIDS patients.

Bernal, who will play another AIDS patient, is best known for roles in films like Amores Perros, The Motorcycle Diaries and, most recently, Casa de mi Padre.

Filming is set to begin in November in New Orleans with Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack providing the screenplay and Robbie Brenner, Nathan Ross and Rachel Rothman-Winter producing.
