Comic-Con: Guillermo del Toro Inspired to Make Hellboy 3 a Reality

July 14, 2012

With the way Hellboy 2 ended, well, you definitely expected a sequel. Yes, the sequel's main story was tied up, but Hellboy's life on a personal level was going to take an interesting turn. Further, HB was careening towards a certain destiny that director Guillermo del Toro always going to be "dark."

After Hellboy 2 was released, grossing $75 million domestically ($84 million overseas), Del Toro seemed a less enthusiastic about the notion of a third entry. One could speculate that perhaps he wasn't thrilled by the second film's performance - or the studio's desire for a threequel. Then again, even if he wanted do Hellboy 3 - where would he fit it into his busy schedule?

But after a recent Make-A-Wish function, in which Ron Perlman took on the Hellboy guise one more time (read about that here), it appears things might be turning around for Hellboy 3.

Del Toro tells Entertainment Weekly: "I can say publicly that now we are together in trying [to do Hellboy 3]." He says between the Make-A-Wish event and the youthful Hellboy fanbase, he's interested in completing the trilogy.

“The [first] two movies were really set up to have this unbelievable resolve,” Perlman told EW.  “Everything that was done in both movies was leading up to this destiny, written in stone, of what Hellboy has been summoned to Earth to do. To not do it, particularly in light of the scope that Guillermo is thinking of for the resolve, would be in my mind a little bit of a shame.”

Mind you, Hellboy 3 does not have a green light, nor is a studio on board, but Del Toro says, "We’re going to make an effort to do it. I hope it happens.”
