The Star Wars News Roundup - 7.4.14

Source:   Scott Chitwood
July 4, 2014

The purpose of this roundup is to put the highlights of all things Star Wars from the last week in one location. If you read this each week, you should be able to converse fluently with any Star Wars fan on everything from the latest Star Wars: Episode VII developments to the latest toys. And maybe you'll even share with them something that they might have missed.

Let's get to it!

Episode VII News and Rumors

Latino-Review posted an update about the ongoing speculation that "Episode VII" may be delayed to May 2016:

- The movie will NOT be delayed because of Harrison Ford’s injuries. (I can actually second source this thanks to Star Wars 7 News) This information is from this week, it’s not old, it’s not speculation.

- Kathleen Kennedy and JJ Abrams want a May 4th, 2016 release date.

- Bob Iger is not giving it to them.

Jedi News got this update from a source:

"The production was effectively in shutdown last week with the majority of cast and crew on call, but not on set. The same applies to the coming week, or at least the first half of it."

"All the decision makers and big guns were on set and working hard to re-plan the full production, from when talent would be needed to priorities in set build, costume and effects. All department heads attended and held a number of meetings in order to put into effect a plan B to work around Ford's time off."

"The Star Wars crew seem in amazingly high and confident spirits and whilst there has been disruption there is no sense of panic whatsoever. In fact, I would go as far to say they seem supremely confident that they are working on and achieving great things and you would not think any setback had happened."

Meanwhile, Hollywood Elsewhere reports on how they’ll get around Ford’s injury:

A director friend who knows people says he's "hearing on pretty good authority they'll be using CGI to put Harrison Ford's face on a body double, probably his usual stunt double, so he'll be able to complete his Star Wars, Episode VII role no matter what the state of his recovery will be." CG face-pasting was a big deal 14 years ago when Gladiator technicians brought Oliver Reed back to life for scenes he hadn't shot at the time of his passing. The late Paul Walker was recently CG'ed for unfinished Fast and Furious 7 scenes, etc. The Ford work, if and when they actually decide to do it, will presumably be less difficult given the fact that he's alive and relatively well.

On the casting front, multiple sources are saying Carrie Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, has a role in "Episode VII":

Billie Lourd, Carrie Fisher's daughter is in "Star Wars: Episode VII." We don't know what part it is (could be a cameo).

Billie Lourd is the child of Carrie Fisher and her father is Bryan Lourd, Partner, Managing Director and Co-Chairman of Creative Arts Agency.

The Mirror went even further with an unlikely rumor:

Star Carrie reprises her role as Princess Leia in the upcoming instalment of the sci-fi series, currently being filmed at Pinewood Studios.

And although her daughter Billie Lourd is considered by some a relative unknown, director J.J. Abrams is said to have chosen her to play a young version of her mother's character.

An unnamed source in The Sun is quoted as confirming that Billie will have her hair styled into Leia-style buns.

SciFiNow - Star Wars: Episode VII - Andy Serkis on role, script & Abrams

"The Imaginarium is now involved in all of the performance capture on the Star Wars projects," Serkis confirms, "and I'm playing a character in that."

"It's extraordinary. I grew up with Star Wars and was a massive fan of the original films. I never imagined in a million years that I'd be engaging with this. It's just come about so organically.

"JJ Abrams and I met, and we just had this incredible kind of vibe between us. He said, 'You'd fit really well in this universe,' and I said, 'I think I probably could.' We're working very closely, as I say, in two ways: the Imaginarium is providing all of the performance characters, and I myself am playing a character in it.

"I'm thrilled, deeply excited," he continued. "Sitting at that read-through the other day was just extraordinary. It was an amazing event; being with the original cast was just incredible. I just think the script is so wonderful, and both the old and the newbies in the cast are just so thrilled and excited to get together."

Warwick Davis did a Q&A on Reddit and deftly dodged questions about "Episode VII":

Warwick, I've been a huge fan of yours for years! My questions: Which one of the many characters you played in Star Wars: Episode 1 was your favorite? And the one I'm sure everyone will ask, have you gotten a call about Episode VII??

"I think it was the character that you see watching the pod race, which George named Weazel, because I quite like characters who are more mysterious, who you don't know that much about, and he's quite intriguing because you don't know much about him other than he likes to gamble on pod races. I think he's my favourite. Although, I played Yoda for one scene as well."

Insanity Lurks Inside - Disney Parks- Star Wars Land Likely Delayed?

With new movies being released, we'll likely have to wait until those are underway. On top of the fact another blog (Disney and More) believe that the final update of Star Tours will be Disneyland Paris but not until 2016. They make some valid points, we'll likely not see a full 'land' coming until this point due to updating the current rides. When you toss out the idea that Disney World, the most likely park to receive a new 'Star Wars Land' first, is still in the middle of working on AvatarLand.. it's unlikely that they'll take on two massive construction projects at once.

International Business Times - Star Wars: Battlefront 3 Release Date Delayed as Devs Update Fans on the Game Creation Experience

Production of "Star Wars: Episode 7" is not the only buzz that's taking the "Star Wars" fan community by storm. After the debut trailer at E3 2014, EA's upcoming "Star Wars: Battlefront 3" is also looking to be one of the more anticipated video games in the future.

Evidence of possible release date being held back is attributed to the fact that DICE Stockholm has been hauled off to help work on some of bugs and issues with "Battlefield 4," according to SWTOR Strategies. Not much has been said by DICE regarding this particular issue and how it will affect the development of "Star Wars: Battlefront 3." But it does make fans think of the timelines and whether the planned 2015 release date will really push through.

There's still a bit of good news here even with the possible release date delay for "Star Wars: Battlefront 3."

In a report from iDigital Times, it seems DICE Stockholm is back in the drawing boards for "Star Wars: Battlefront 3," as the other "Battlefield 4" DLCs will now fall under the responsibility of DICE L.A.
