Robin Williams to Return for Mrs. Doubtfire Sequel

It's been more than two decades since Robin Williams proved the box office power of his Mrs. Doubtfire, the 1993 Chris Columbus comedy that pulled in more than $440 million worldwide. Now, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Fox 2000 has a sequel in the works with both Williams and Columbus attached to return as star and director, respectively. David Berenbaum (Elf) will provide the screenplay.

The original film (also co-produced by Williams) was based on Anne Fine's 1987 novel, Madame Doubtfire, and also stars Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan. It follows the misadventures of an unemployed actor, Daniel Hillard, who, following his divorce, disguises himself as an elderly female nanny, allowing him to secretly masquerade his way back into the lives of his children.

The trade notes that attempts at forming a sequel to Mrs. Doubtfire have been made in the past with Bonnie Hunt trying her hand at the screenplay in 2001. Assuming this take has a bit more success, check back for updates on the project as they develop.
