Episode VII Movie News Summary

Bleeding Cool reported this week on a new casting rumor:

Jack O'Connell, who was excellent in Tower Block, Harry Brown, Skins and many more, is a real contender for a key role in Star Wars: Episode VII. I believe that he's met with Abrams and the signs I'm getting are that this meeting went very well.

O'Connell will also be in 300: Rise of an Empire and b>Unbroken.

Daily Superhero reports on an interesting rumor related to Benedict Cumberbatch:

According to one of The Daily SuperHero's insiders in Tinseltown, a rumor is circling through several inner circles stating that the buzz surrounding the Cumberbatch rumor of being in Star Wars Episode VII might be something that has been manufactured by Disney. This distraction is being done to help conceal what Disney really wants the actor for... and that's to be in a future Marvel Studios film.

Finally, Entertainment Weekly spoke with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and "Episode VII" came up:

But it was a high-profile project on the big screen that truly lit up their faces, as Fey and Poehler revealed that they have scored roles in the new Star Wars film as… Darth Vader's mothers.

POEHLER: "He has two horrible mothers. We know a lot of father stuff with Star Wars, and not a lot of mother stuff. We play these really naggy mothers of Darth Vader."

FEY: [In an elderly New Yorker accent] "Darth, eat! Why don't you eat?" That kind of stuff.

POEHLER: "You're never gonna find a girl when you go out looking like that!"

FEY: Making him practice his Jedi stuff for hours.

POEHLER: Hitting on all his Jedi friends inappropriately. I feel like the theme of the next Star Wars is going to be: How does a working mother juggle it all? I'm looking forward to that. What I like about all these giant superhero movies is that they speak to the issues that I'm dealing with right now — working mother and time management and how to be an interesting, sexual, curious woman in your 40s. That's the kind of stuff that I like to see on the screen, and that's what I see with a lot of the films out today.

As an extra bonus, EW got J.J. Abrams to comment on the Darth Moms. Check it out!

Television

Yahoo! UK reports that a Star Wars TV series may be headed to Netflix much like the recent Marvel TV series:

According to a source close to production, a new 'Star Wars' TV series is currently being considered… and it could head straight to Netflix.

"I've been hearing some talk that the 'Star Wars' license will move onto Netflix properties as well as 'Star Wars Rebels.' The idea being tossed around right now is a series focusing on Cad Bane from 'The Clone Wars'. But this is very early talks."

The Wrap seemed to confirm the Netflix portion of the rumor in an interview with Walt Disney Company Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo:

When it comes to integrating LucasFilm and its "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" brands into the Magic Kingdom, Rasulo said the model will be closely aligned to how it has treated another one of its major purchases.

"You can substitute the word Marvel for LucasFilm," Rasulo said.

The strategy when it came to capitalizing on the comic book empire, Rausl0 said was "..to take this treasure trove of content and deliver it through the Disney eco-system."

That manifested itself in the way that the cinematic adventures of individual superheroes like Captain America and Iron Man all fed into one massive super-team film, "The Avengers." The global success of "The Avengers," in turn, provided a substantial "box office lift" to solo outings such as "Thor: The Dark World" and "Iron Man 3″ that were released in its wake, Rasulo argued.

Likewise, the box office heft of the film franchises generated interest in television spin-offs like ABC's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and an upcoming series of shows based on characters like Luke Cage and Daredevil that will be released on Netflix.
