On the night before its Cannes Film Festival premiere, Sony Pictures Classics has announced that they have picked up the North American distribution rights for Only Lovers Left Alive, the new movie from New York City auteur Jim Jarmusch (Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law, Broken Flowers), which is a romantic thriller starring Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin and Jeffrey Wright.

SPC has also provided us with a plot summary that doesn't mention the word "vampire" anywhere in it although that doesn't necessarily mean this isn't Jarmusch's "vampire movie":

"Only Lovers Left Alive takes place against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier and follows an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, who reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover. Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister."

Sony Pictures Classics said this about the movie in the press release announcing the acquisition:

"Only Lovers Left Alive is one of the great Jarmusch pictures and American audiences will love it. We are excited to be back with Jim and our great friends Jeremy Thomas and Tilda Swinton, whose performance along with the rest of the cast is fantastic.

No word on when Sony Pictures Classics plans on releasing the movie.
