The Trailer for Disobedience, Starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams

Bleecker Street has debuted the first trailer for Disobedience, starring Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams and Alessandro Nivola. The film is based on Naomi Alderman’s debut novel of the same name with a screenplay written by director Sebastian Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Ida).

The film follows Ronit (Weisz) as she returns from New York, after the death of her estranged rabbi father, to the Orthodox Jewish community in North London where she grew up. Once back at home, she stirs up controversy when she shows an interest in her childhood friend, Esti (McAdams) who is married to Rabbi Dovid (Nivola). The trailer effectively illustrates the bleakness of this community and the gradual progression of Ronit and Esti’s relationship.

The depiction of this forbidden love affair is the English-language debut of Lelio after finding success in his previous Spanish-speaking works, including 2013’s Gloria and 2017’s A Fantastic Woman. Weisz’s LC6 Productions produced the film alongside Element Pictures (Room) and Braven Films (Magic Magic).

Disobedience premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year to immense critical acclaim, with many praising the impressively captivating performances from both Weisz and McAdams. The film generated buzz during the festival circuit as it contains certain sequences which involve heavily intimate moments between the two actresses, sequences the director has praised the two leads for:

“They were brave from the beginning. I felt so lucky to be dealing with real artists willing to take a risk. Acting is risk — it’s about trusting a director, and blindly jumping off the cliff.”

Disobedience will open in select theaters on April 27th, 2018. What do you think about the Disobedience trailer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
