The Sherlock Special Trailer Has the Right Duo at the Wrong Time

The Sherlock Special trailer is a mystery all it’s own!

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s Holmes and Watson are back in the Sherlock Special trailer! in the player below, you can take a look at the upcoming Christmas special, which apparently restages the events of the series to the 19th century. Or, perhaps, there’s an even bigger game afoot…

“The first few days we were just so excited because we saw our show with Benedict and Martin in the proper gear and his extraordinary sideburns and you think ‘why didn’t we always do this? Why did we make that silly mistake of updating it?'” series creator Steven Moffatt told the UK’s Express earlier this year. “But by the end we slightly missed the modern iteration. Maybe we’ll just alternate them all. Mark [Gatiss] and I think we should do the 1940’s propaganda German version.”

Sherlock began airing in 2010, establishing a pattern of three 90-minute episodes per series. The most recent episode, “His Last Vow,” concluded Sherlock series three with a bit of a cliffhanger, teasing the return of Andrew Scott’s Jim Moriarty.

A fourth Sherlock series is also expected to go into production soon for a 2016 release. No official plans, however, have as of yet been revealed.

“We’ve got a clear idea of what we’re going to do and it’s going to be a clear shift in tone,” Moffatt also told Express of the planned Sherlock series four. “Yes, there’s going to be some dark stuff coming but there always is. There always fun and jokes and detection and all that nonsense. It’s dark in some ways – obviously it’s great fun and a Sherlock Holmes romp and all that – but there’s a sense of things coming back to bite you.””

What do you think of the Sherlock Special trailer? Do you think that this episode ties to the broader Sherlock continuity in some way, or is this a one-off adventure?
