Summit Entertainment has kept things quiet when it comes to Juan Antonio Bayona‘s The Impossible, continually leading me to doubt if it would actually come out this year. When I learned it would have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival line-up that doubt obviously came to an end and to know I would be among the first to see it ahead of what is now a confirmed December 21 release date, I couldn’t have been more happy.

Bayona’s The Orphanage was a film that showed some serious talent and now, five years later, he is tackling an effects-heavy drama centered on the 2004 tsunami that crashed into the shores of Thailand. The focus is on Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons vacationing in the tropical paradise, but on the morning of December 26th, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth and a wall of black water races across the hotel grounds.

Like I said, I can’t wait to see this film and if you haven’t yet seen The Orphanage, do yourself a favor and add it to your queue and you’ll likely be just as excited for this one as I am.
