Co-written and exec-produced by Hayao Miyazaki, we now have a new, English-language trailer for Arrietty (Kari-gurashi no Arietti), the directorial debut of Hiromasa Yonebayashi and based on Mary Norton’s novel of the same name.

The story centers on a sickly little boy named Sho (voiced by Tom Holland) who comes to live with his great aunt Sadako (voiced by Carol Burnett). Seeing a cat chasing something in the bushes, he comes across a tiny borrower – so called because they ‘borrow’ everything they need from humans up above. She’s Arrietty (voiced by Saoirse Ronan), whose mother Homily (voiced by Olivia Colman) warns her about befriending Sho, since borrowers are not supposed to be seen by humans. But Arietty disobeys her mother and becomes firm friends with Sho. Realizing they have been discovered, Arrietty’s father, Pod (voiced by Mark Strong), makes plans to move out of the house. But danger is never far away and the miniature family soon find they need Sho’s help.

Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Phyllida Law and Geraldine McEwan are also among the English language voice cast. The film was released in Japan last July, plays at the Moscow International Film Festival today and will hit UK cinemas on July 29. The voice cast for the original Japanese release includes Mirai Shida, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Shinobu Otake, Keiko Takeshita, Tatsuya Fujiwara, Tomokazu Miura and Kirin Kiki.

Walt Disney Pictures has the domestic rights, and the current release date is set for February 17, 2012. Check out the English-language international trailer, which is almost read in some sort of a Dr. Seuss-language if you ask me, below and click here to browse six images from the film.

Also, here is a new Japanese teaser trailer for Goro Miyazaki’s next film, following up on the rather disappointing Tales from Earthsea. The film is said to be an adaptation of Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsuro Sayama’s “Kokuriko-Zaka Kara” manga.

The synopsis from ANN reads as follows:

The manga is set in Showa 38 (1963, a year before the Tokyo Olympics) and follows the coming of age of an ordinary, pigtailed high school girl named Komatsuzaki in Yokohama, a harbor city near Tokyo. Her sailor father went missing after an accident, and her photographer mother is frequently going abroad for work. Her family now runs a lodging house. The manga recounts Komatsuzaki’s everyday life of “laughter and tears” with two boys — a school newspaper member named Shun Kazama and the student council president Mizunuma.
