Most Craved Takes on Hollywood Remakes!

In the player above, you can check out the latest episode of Most Craved, our weekly online discussion series wherein our hosts tackle the biggest entertainment news of the week.

This week’s hosts include William Bibbiani of CraveOnlineJenna Busch of Legion of Leia and our our own Silas Lesnick. We’re shifting the format a little bit for this episode and are diving into a broader conversation about Hollywood remakes. There’s certainly an audience stigma when it comes to the notion of redoing an earlier film, but we’ve also seen certain remakes become true cinematic classics. After all, the long list includes Victor Fleming’s Wizard of Oz, John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon and, more recently, Martin Scorsese’s Academy Award-winning crime drama The Departed. Does “originality” really triumph in storytelling, or are films just variations on a few basic themes?

The big news on the Hollywood remakes front this week is the announcement that Dwayne Johnson will be headlining a new big screen adaptation of John Carpenter’s 1986 cult classic, Big Trouble in Little China. Is The Rock the right man to steer the Porkchop Express, or would it be better to just continue the world of the original and bring back Kurt Russell in some capacity to pass the reins?

We’re also looking at some of the Hollywood remake terminology that gets thrown around when it comes to remakes. Is there really a difference between a reboot, a re-adaptation and a re-imagining and do the semantics help cut the stigma?

Don’t let the conversation stop with us! We want to hear your own thoughts on not just these topics but on anything you’d like to see the show cover in the future. Let us know in the comments below! We’ve also launched the official Most Craved Twitter feed and we’d love it if you’d give us a follow!
