Truth is Stranger Than Fiction in the Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter Trailer

Amplify has just released the trailer for Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, the new based on fact drama from director David Zellner that stars Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim, The Brothers Bloom). Check it out in the player below, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies.

In the film, Kumiko (Kikuchi) lives in a cluttered, cramped apartment in Tokyo with her pet rabbit, Bunzo. She works as an office lady, robotically preparing tea and fetching dry cleaning for her nitpicking boss. But on her own time, she obsessively watches a well-known American film on a weathered VHS tape. Rewinding and fast-forwarding repeatedly, she meticulously maps out where a briefcase of loot is buried within the fictional film. Convinced that her destiny depends on finding the money, Kumiko heads to the United States and into the harsh Minnesota winter to search for it.

The well-known American film happens to be Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1996 Academy Award winning black comedy Fargo which, despite a claim to the contrary at the beginning, is not a true story. The belief that it is, however, managed to fuel Kumiko’s quest.

Scripted by Zellner alongside his brother, Nathan Zellner (both of whom also appear in the film), Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter also stars Nobuyuki Katsube and Shirley Venard.

Look for Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter in theaters March 13, 2015.
