Dan Trachtenberg Takes Y: The Last Man

New Line Cinema has hired commercials director Dan Trachtenberg to helm their upcoming adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra’s modern classic Y: The Last Man. Trachtenberg is well known for his short fan film Portal: No Escape, which was released online in 2011.

Planned for development as a feature film almost as far back as its 2002 comic book debut, Y: The Last Man will feature a screenplay by Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia’s.

Y tells the story of Yorick Brown, a young man who, along with his capuchin monkey, somehow survives a catastrophic event that kills off every living creature with a Y chromosome. Left in a world of only women, Yorick teams with a government operative, 355, to try and uncover the truth about the plague and why he and he alone made it through alive.

Although set against an epically scaled science fiction backdrop, the 60-issue series serves as an exploration of modern gender politics and ultimately becomes an intimate coming-of-age drama.
