Captain Marvel Poster Features Cameo by Her Comic Book Cat

Now that the Captain Marvel trailer has been unleashed on the world, the internet will spend hours dissecting every frame, looking for clues about the story and how it will connect to the overall MCU. But one big clue might be hidden in the film’s official poster: the image of a tabby cat walking out of frame, which Marvel fans may recognize as Captain Marvel’s pet Flerken, Chewie. You can see the poster below, with Chewie semi-hidden in the lower-left corner.

Flerken are similar in appearance to Earth’s cats, except that they lay eggs, and have access to “pocket dimensions” in their body where they can store the eggs, along with fangs, tentacles, and all sorts of other defense mechanisms to ensure their survival in the cosmic universe. Of course, there’s no way of knowing if Chewie will factor into the story, or was just included as a nod to Captain Marvel fans. Either way, March can’t get here fast enough.

Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, whose credits include Mississippi Grind and Half Nelson. An all-star collective of accomplished writers penned the screenplay, including Meg LeFauve (Inside OutThe Good Dinosaur), Nicole Perlman (First ManGuardians of the Galaxy), Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider, upcoming Sherlock Holmes 3), Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch (Glow), and Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck.

Composer Pinar Toprak will be composing the score for the film. This will mark the first time a female composer has been tapped to compose the entire score for a major superhero film, let alone a movie for Marvel Studios. Born in Turkey, Toprak’s previous credits include the SYFY series Krypton, smaller films like The Lightkeepers, and even the popular video game Fortnite. Toprak also previously worked on the Justice League movie, contributing additional music to the film.

Kevin Feige is the producer of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Patty Whitcher, and Stan Lee are executive producers, with Lars Winther serving as co-producer/first assistant director and David Grant serving as co-producer.

Captain Marvel will debut in theaters on March 8, 2019.
