Emma Watson Replacing Emma Stone in Sony’s Little Women Movie

Variety reports that Emma Watson (Harry Potter, Beauty and the Beast) has joined the cast of Greta Gerwrig’s upcoming Little Women movie following the departure of Academy Award winner Emma Stone. The reason for Stone’s leaving on the project remains unclear but with production on the film set to begin in the next month, the studio was eager to find a replacement. Watson will now fill in for the role of Meg March.

Watson joins a cast that includes Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Mary Queen of Scots), Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name, Beautiful Boy), Florence Pugh (The Falling), Laura Dern (Twin Peaks, Jurassic Oark), and James Norton. Jo March would be played by Ronan, Chalamet portraying Laurie Laurence, and Amy March being played by Pugh.

Little Women is based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott. The story follows the March sisters: Amy, Jo, Beth and Meg in post-Civil War America. The book has been adapted numerous times, including the recent BBC miniseries starring Maya Hawke, Kathryn Newton, Dylan Baker and Willa Fitzgerald.

Little Women‘s screenplay is written by Gerwig who is also set to direct the film. The producers are Amy Pascal, Denise Di Novi and Robin Swicord. Andrea Giannetti will oversee the production for Columbia.

Sony’s Columbia Pictures will release the film on Christmas Day 2019.
