Variety reports that Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó will direct Inherit The Earth, a sci-fi project that’s been in development at Sony since 2011. Kate Weber, Mundruczó’s wife, will be re-writing the screenplay. Mundruczó’s directing credits include Jupiter’s Moon and White God. He also has several acting credits under his belt.

The film was, at one time, described as the story of the last survivor on Earth, and the group of robots who protect her from the zombies that roam the plane in the meantime. Although the film is reportedly still in the very early stages of development, so that all may change. When the script was first acquired, zombies were a hot commodity, thanks to TV shows like The Walking Dead and the zombie/road-trip comedy Zombieland. Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game) had been attached to write and direct at one point.

Variety also notes that given the status of the film, it has yet to be greenlit by the studio.
