Crazy Rich Asians Wins the Weekend with $25 Million Debut

Warner Bros. PicturesCrazy Rich Asians took the box office by storm this past week, bringing in $25 million for the weekend. Adding on to its haul from Wednesday and Thursday showings, the film now stands at $34 million domestically with a staggered international release planned by the studio. Based on the acclaimed worldwide bestseller by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians features an international cast of stars led by Constance Wu, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, and Awkwafina, with Ken Jeong and Michelle Yeoh. The large starring ensemble also includes Henry Golding, making his feature film debut, Sonoya Mizuno , Chris Pang, Jimmy O. Yang, comedian Ronny Chieng, Remi Hii, and Nico Santos  Jon M. Chu directed the contemporary romantic comedy.

WB’s other international summer film The Meg slipped into the #2 position with another $21.15 million, bringing its domestic total to $83.7 million. Internationally it added another $67 million this weekend in 55 territories bringing the international total $230.4 million and giving it a global total of $314.1 million. Directed by John Turteltaub, the film stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Cliff Curtis, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, Page Kennedy, Jessica McNamee, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Robert Taylor, Sophia Shuya Cai, and Masi Oka.

Mark Wahlberg’s latest action thriller Mile 22 opened in third place with a $13.6 million opening, among one of the lowest openings for the actor’s career in recent years. A sequel was previously said to be in development. The film is directed by Peter Berg and also stars Academy Award nominee John Malkovich, as well as Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais and Ronda Rousey.

Sony Pictures and Studio 8’s Alpha was left out in the cold, debuting in fourth place with $10.5 million against a reported $51 million budget. The ice age set adventure was previously set to debut in September of 2017 but a number of delays and rescheduling opened the film this past Friday. Kodi Smit-McPhee stars in the film alongside Natassia Malthe, Leonor Varela, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Mercedes de la Zerda, and Jens Hultén. Directed by Albert Hughes the film is written by Daniele Sebastian Wiedenhaupt.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout lost its grip and slipped down to fifth place, bringing in another $10.5 million for a domestic total of $180.7 million. Internationally the sequel added another $20.5 million for a total of $320.7 million, globally the film has now crossed the $500 million mark and is the fourth highest grossing film in the franchise (without accounting for inflation). The film is slightly behind 2011’s Ghost Protocol and 2015’s Rogue Nation which finished their theatrical runs with $694.7 million worldwide and $682.7 million worldwide, respectively, but is performing better in many markets than Rogue Nation previously did. Tom Cruise leads the Christopher McQuarrie film which co-stars Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Angela Bassett, Michelle Monaghan and Alec Baldwin.

Disney’s Christopher Robin fell from third to sixth place, but added $8.9 million domestically and $7.9 million internationally. The film now sits at $66.9 million in the US with a global total of $89.7 million. Directed by Marc Forster, Ewan McGregor stars as the title character alongside Hayley Atwell, Bronte Carmichael, and Mark Gatiss.  Voicing the characters from the hundred acre wood include Jim Cummings as Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, Brad Garrett as Eeyore, Toby Jones as Owl, Nick Mohammed as Piglet, Peter Capaldi as Rabbit, and Sophie Okonedo as Kanga.

Spike Lee’s latest joint BlacKkKlansman fell from fifth place to seventh but only dropped -35.5% from weekend to weekend, adding another $7 million in its second weekend and giving it a domestic total of $23 million. The film was made for a reported budget of $15 million. Based on a true story, the film stars John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier and Topher Grace.
