Mission: Impossible – Fallout Opens to Series Record of $153 Million Worldwide

Much like the star the series Tom Cruise, Paramount Pictures’ Mission: Impossible – Fallout shows no signs of stopping. The sixth film in the franchise opened to a franchise record of $153 million worldwide with a domestic debut of $61.5 million (a domestic opening record for the series without factoring in inflation adjustments). Internationally the film has only opened in 40% of its markets but is already outpacing Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation by 19%. The feature opens in China, where Rogue Nation grossed over $135 million, on August 31. Written and directed once again by Christopher McQuarrie, the sequel also stars Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan, plus Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again held strong at the box office and stayed in second place, eclipsing last week’s #1 film The Equalizer 2. The film brought in an additional $15.2 million, a drop of just 48% from last weekend, which brings its domestic total to $70.4 million. Internationally the sequel has brought in $96.8 million total for a worldwide gross of $167.23 million. The sequel has quite a ways to go to watch up to its predecessor concluded its domestic run with $144 million and was a huge international hit bringing in $465 million around the world. Academy Award winner Meryl Streep returns alongside, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski. Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, with Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Oscar winner Colin Firth. Here We Go Again also incorporates flashbacks including Lily James as a Young Donna plus Alexa Davies, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Jeremy Irvine, Josh Dylan and Hugh Skinner.

Columbia Pictures’ The Equalizer 2 fell 61% from last weekend with an estimated second weekend haul of $14 million. The R-rated sequel opened higher than its predecessor but has now dipped lower than the first Equalizer, which brought in over $18 million in its second weekend of release. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Denzel Washington in the title role once again in the first sequel of his career. Pedro Pascal, Ashton Sanders, Bill Pullman, and Melissa Leo co-star.

Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation fell to fourth place with an additional $12.3 million, giving it a domestic total of  $119.2 million. Internationally the film now sits at $165 million for a worldwide total of $284.2 million. The third entry in the series is getting close to catching up to the previous films, the first of which ended with $148 million domestically and the second one which closed out with $169.7 million in the US. Featuring the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Keegan-Michael Key, Molly Shannon, Fran Drescher, Kathryn Hahn, Jim Gaffigan, and Mel Brooks, the sequel is directed by Genndy Tartakovsky.

Teen Titans GO! to the Movies, the feature film spin-off of the hit TV series, opened in fifth place with $10.5 million. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Peter Rida Michail, the film features the voice cast of the series including Greg Cipes as Beast Boy, Scott Menville as Robin, Khary Payton as Cyborg, Tara Strong as Raven, and Hynden Walch as Starfire. In the film, they reprise their roles from the Cartoon Network series, which follows the crime fighting adventures and antics of the young Super Hero roommates.

Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and The Wasp is starting to shrink down, bringing in an additional $8.4 million domestically and $11.5 million internationally. The sequel now sits at $183.1 in the US, an international total of $211.1 million, which gives it a worldwide gross of $394.2 million. The film has no officially passed 2015’s Ant-Man at the domestic box office, which ended its theatrical run with $180.2 million in the US. Globally Ant-Man and The Wasp is still short of the first film which brought in $519.3 million worldwide. The seqeul stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Peña, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, Abby Ryder Fortson, Tip “T.I.” Harris, David Dastmalchian, Hannah John-Kamen, Walton Goggins, Randall Park, with Michelle Pfeiffer, with Laurence Fishburne, and Academy Award winner Michael Douglas. The sequel was directed once again by Peyton Reed.

Disney•Pixar‘s Incredibles 2 continues to perform well even at the lower end of the box office. The sequel brought in an additional $7.2 million at the domestic box office for a US total of $572.8 million. Internationally it added another $20 million, pushing the film’s global total to an estimated $997 million worldwide. Domestically the film is still the highest grossing animated movie of all time, but its worldwide gross sits just behind the likes of  Zootopia, Finding Dory, Despicable Me 3Toy Story 3, Minions, and Frozen. Written and directed by Brad Bird, the film features the voices of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner, Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Bird, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Jonathan Banks, Sophia Bush, and Isabella Rossellini.

Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom added another $6.78 million to its domestic gross for a US total of $397.55 million. The sequel’s international gross now sits at $837.9 million for a worldwide total of $1.235 billion. Directed by J.A. Bayona, the film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, James Cromwell, Ted Levine, Justice Smith, Geraldine Chaplin, Daniella Pineda, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall and Isabella Sermon, with BD Wong and Jeff Goldblum.

Dwayne Johnson’s latest action-adventure film Skyscraper fell into 9th place in its third weekend of release, bringing in another $5.4 million domestically, bringing its US total to $59.15 million. Internationally the film has brought in $111.1 million with $85.34 million coming from China alone. Worldwide Skyscraper has brought in $255.59 million. In the film, Johnson co-stars with Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Noah Taylor, Roland Møller, Byron Mann, Pablo Schreiber, and Hannah Quinlivan. Rawson Marshall Thurber (Central Intelligence, We’re the Millers) wrote and directed.
