The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road), Glen Powell (Scream Queens), and Miles Teller (Whiplash) are currently the frontrunners to play the son of Goose — played by Anthony Edwards in the first film — in Top Gun 2. The announcement comes after it was recently confirmed that Val Kilmer will be reprising his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

Those who have seen Top Gun remember Goose as being best friends and wingman to Tom Cruise’s Maverick who dies in an accident. His young son has now grown up in the second installment, and Hoult, Powell, and Teller are at the top of the list to play him.

Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed Cruise in Oblivion, will helm the sequel, with Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer penning the script. Although the title Top Gun: Maverick floated around briefly, the film is currently without an official title.

A follow-up to Tony Scott’s 1986 hit has been in the works for quite some time, with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously outlined that the film will deal with the rise of unmanned drones and pilots becoming a thing of the past.

The original Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott and also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Tom Skerritt. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Take My Breath Away” performed by Berlin. In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Paramount Pictures has set the Top Gun sequel release date for July 12, 2019.

Hoult’s other feature credits include X-Men: Apocalypse, Warm Bodies, and the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Powell is known for his role in the TV series Scream Queens and was last seen in the comedy romance Set It Up. Teller’s recent credits include War Dogs, Thank You for Your Service, and a role in the television series Too Old to Die Young that is set to premiere sometime this year.
