Idris Elba to Star as the Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix

The Hollywood Reporter brings word Golden Globe winner Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation, Luther, Avengers: Infinity War) is taking on the classic gothic romance The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix where he is set to star, direct, and produce the modern re-telling.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is being written by Michael Mitnick (The Current War, The Giver), adapting Victor Hugo’s classic French Romantic/gothic novel of the same name that was published in 1831. The original story takes place in 1482 and follows Quasimodo, a hunchback who falls in love with the gypsy Esmeralda.

Elba is producing under his Green Door production banner and will also be producing original music for the feature, which is being described as a “sonic and musical experience.” Fred Berger (La La Land) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Midnight Special) will produce for Automatik, along with Elba and Green Door’s Ana Garanito.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is arguably best known by the Disney animated adaptation that was released in 1996. Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, the film voice cast included Demi Moore, Jason Alexander, Tom Hulce, Kevin Kline, and Mary Kay Bergman.

Elba made his directorial debut this year with the Sundance drama Yardie. He also created the comedy Turn Up Charlie that was ordered straight-to-series by Netflix, where he will also star and executive produce.
