Clue Reboot Could Be R-Rated, Deadpool 2 Writers Tease

In January it was announced that 20th Century Fox has made a deal with Deadpool 2 star Ryan Reynolds to make a Clue reboot based on the Hasbro board game. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool 1 & 2, Zombieland) are currently writing the screenplay, and have told MTV what fans can expect from the new version, including an R-rating.

“Don’t be surprised if ‘Clue’ is R-rated… Potentially,” Wernick teased.

“It will have elements of [the original movie], but it’s important that we don’t try and just rehash it,” Reese said. “We want to build on it. We want to take some of what makes it fun and funny, but then we want to do our own thing. It’s about finding that balance. Hopefully we don’t upset the Clue-hounds because there are a lot of them, apparently. We didn’t realize this until we signed up.”

Clue was a 1985 comedy based on the board game, which involves players figuring which of the guests at a mansion murdered someone, with which murder weapon and in which room. The film was directed by Jonathan Lynn. Lynn worked on the script with John Landis. Clue starred Eileen Brennan (Private Benjamin), Tim Curry (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Madeline Kahn (Young Frankenstein), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), Michael McKean (This Is Spinal Tap), Martin Mull (Roseanne) and Lesley Ann Warren (Desperate Housewives). The film had one of three possible endings, and different theaters received different ones. All were included on the home video release. Though the film didn’t do well in its run a the box office, only making $14,643,997 in domestic sales, it has become a cult classic.

Reynolds’ Maximum Effort production shingle will produce the Clue reboot with Allspark Pictures, which is the film division of Hasbro.
