Bruce Campbell Says Evil Dead Remake is ‘Fabulous’

Bruce Campbell is a straight shooter. He always speaks frankly and that’s evident in an interview he participated in with Digital Spy. The subject, naturally, is next year’s Evil Dead remake (“the” was dropped from the title).

Campbell served as a producer on the Fede Alvarez-directed redo alongside Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, so it’s not as if the property was placed into unfamiliar hands. Still, that’s not stopping the fans from being upset that the original film is even getting an update in the first place.

Campbell is well aware you’re “pissed,” folks, but he has something to say about the film now that he’s seen a rough cut of it.

“We’re really excited and really behind it, [but] it’s going to take a bit to get the Evil Dead fans behind it. We know we’ve pissed a lot of them off. We appreciate that and we appreciate their anger and their zeal, but the only thing we want to impress upon them is that we didn’t screw it up. This is going to be just as memorable as [the original] Evil Dead without being the same movie,” Campbell told the site.

He added he thinks the new film is “fabulous” and “The nice thing is the film looks beautiful. The effects are 10 times better than we ever had access to and the actors are all better than we were in 1979. Though granted Sam Raimi is a mad genius, so we got a crazy result like Evil Dead out of this amateur enthusiasm sort of thing.”

Jane Levy, Lou Taylor Pucci, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore star in the remake which received some rewrites by Diablo Cody.

Evil Dead is scheduled for an April 12, 2013 release.
