Ashley Edward Miller to Write Red Sonja Feature Film

Deadline reports that Millennium Films has hired Ashley Edward Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) to write the screenplay for Red Sonja, based on the comic book heroine from the 1970s.

Red Sonja is a sword-and-sorcery character and the comics were created by Robert E. Howard, writer Roy Thomas, and artist Barry Windsor Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973.

Miller is looking forward to the project, saying: “It’s an exciting opportunity to faithfully adapt the amazing Hyborean world Robert E. Howard created, and inject it with Sonja’s intelligence, ferocity, and fearless humanity. I want people to love Sonja the way I love her, and walk out of the theater understanding why she’s so popular and enduring. Sonja is an icon.”

The Red Sonja comics are still being published today through Dynamite Entertainment. The film was put into fast-track development by Avi Lerner after the success of Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman. Joe Gatta will oversee the project for Millennium, which is financing and producing the project, along with Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon of Cinelou, Christa Campbell and Lati Grobman, and Luke Lieberman, the rights holder of Red Sonja.

Miller’s credits also include the upcoming Big Trouble in Little China for Fox, as well as Andromeda, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Fringe.
