Andrea Riseborough in Talks for The Grudge Remake

According to Deadline, Sony and Ghost House Pictures may have nabbed British thesp Andrea Riseborough (Battle of the Sexes, Birdman, Waco) to take the lead in their The Grudge remake, to be directed by Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother, Piercing). Her role is described as a detective and young single mother. They also note that she will take a role in the Amazon-Sky miniseries Zero, Zero, Zero, set in the world of international cocaine trafficking and directed by Stefano Sollima (Gomorrah).

The original 2004 American version starred Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire SlayerCruel Intentions) as an exchange student who moves to Tokyo and finds herself tormented by spirits of the dead. Gellar returned for a 2006 sequel, but not for the third film, which went direct to home video. The Japanese Ju-On franchise is currently at nine feature films.

The Grudge reboot is based on a script from Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train) and will be produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise. Roy Lee, Joe Drake, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane will executive produce. Erin Westerman and Romel Adam will oversee for Ghost House Pictures.

The first film in the American franchise also starred Jason Behr (RoswellPleasantville), KaDee Strickland (Private PracticeThe Sixth Sense), Clea DuVall (Girl, InterruptedBut I’m a Cheerleader) and Bill Pullman (While You Were SleepingIndependence Day). The second film starred Gellar, Amber Tamblyn (The Sisterhood of the Traveling PantsThe Ring), Arielle Kebbel (True BloodThe Vampire Diaries), Jennifer Beals (FlashdanceThe L Word) and Sarah Roemer (The Con ArtistThe Event).
