Jim Parsons joins film adaptation of The Legend of Georgia McBride

Actor Jim Parsons is set to star in the film adaptation of The Legend of Georgia McBrideNew Regency and Fox 2000 have acquired the feature film rights to the acclaimed 2014 play from Matthew Lopez which follows Casey, a young and broke young man whose wife is nearing her due date and his landlord is constantly knocking at his door. To make matters even more desperate, Casey is fired from his gig as an Elvis impersonator in a run-down, small town Florida bar. When the bar owner brings in a B-level drag show to replace his act, Casey finds that he has a whole lot to learn about show business — and himself.

Parsons will play the role of Miss Tracy Mills, a veteran drag queen who coaches Casey in the art of performing, transforming him from a washed-up Elvis impersonator to a show-stopping drag queen. He will produce the project with his husband Todd Spiewak via their That’s Wonderful Productions banner, while Lopez is set to pen the screenplay. That’s Wonderful’s Eric Norsoph will executive produce and oversee the project for the company. Fox will distribute the feature film.

Parsons is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Sheldon Cooper in the hugely-successful comedy The Big Bang Theory which was renewed through season 12 and garnered a spinoff series, Young Sheldon. He most recently starred opposite Claire Danes in A Kid Like Jake, which was acquired by IFC Films following its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Besides his work on Georgia McBride, Lopez is the author of The Whipping Man, one of the most widely-produced new American plays of the last decade.

The Legend of Georgia McBride has no release date as of yet.
