Kurt Russell to Play Santa Claus for Netflix Movie

According to The Hollywood Reporter, beloved actor Kurt Russell (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, The Hateful Eight, Big Trouble in Little China) will grow out a puffy white beard to portray none other than Santa Claus in an untitled family Christmas comedy for Netflix. Child actors Judah Lewis (The Babysitter) and Darby Camp (Big Little Lies) will co-star.

The film will follow two siblings (Lewis and Camp) attempting to catch Santa on camera to prove that he’s real, but when they accidentally cause his sleigh to crash in Chicago, they have to help him get Christmas back on track before it’s ruined.

Clay Kaytis (The Angry Birds Movie) will direct the live-action movie, which will also have a CGI component. Matt Lieberman, who has several projects in development including The Addams Family animated movie, wrote the screenplay from a story he conjured with Designated Survivor creator David Guggenheim. Home Alone and Harry Potter director Chris Columbus will produce alongside Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe for 1492 Pictures, with a January start date planned for a holiday 2018 release on the streaming service.
