A Star is Born Opens Summer 2018, I, Tonya Gets Awards Release

A Star is Born gets moved up to Summer 2018 and I, Tonya gets an awards season release

Two films are getting new release dates today. First up, the remake of A Star is Born, starring Stephani Germanotta aka Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, is moving up from its original date of September 28, 2018 to a summer release date of May 18, 2018. Warner Bros. executives saw the finished film and wanted to get it out there as soon as possible, according to Deadline. It will open opposite Slender Man and an untitled Laika Studios project.

A four-time Oscar nominee, Cooper (American SniperAmerican HustleSilver Linings Playbook) is directing A Star is Born as well, marking his directorial debut. Cooper plays Jackson Maine, a country music star who is on the brink of decline when he discovers a talented unknown named Ally (Germanotta). As the two begin a passionate love affair, Jack coaxes Ally into the spotlight, catapulting her to stardom. But as Ally’s career quickly eclipses his own, Jack finds it increasingly hard to handle his fading glory.

In addition to playing Ally, Germanotta, who earned her Oscar nod for the song “Til It Happens to You” from The Hunting Ground, has composed and will perform original songs in the film. The main cast for A Star is Born also includes Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Elliott.

I, Tonya, the film about the Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding ice skating scandal starring Margot Robbie, is getting a release date of December 8, 2017, according to THR. This puts the film in the running for the 90th Academy Awards. The film will open that day in New York and Los Angeles, with a rollout to the rest of the country through January. The film will open opposite The Shape of WaterAll the Money in the WorldNovember Criminals and The Disaster Artist.

The Tonya Harding movie will shine a light on the infamous 1994 incident wherein the Olympic figure skater was connected to an attack on skating rival Nancy Kerrigan. Kerrigan was attacked by a hired thug following a practice session in Detroit. Although the intent was to break Kerrigan’s leg, the skater was only bruised and went on to significantly outperform Harding in the Olympics. Following the event, Harding was prosecuted for the attack alongside Gillooly and several additional parties.
