TWC Shuffles Release Dates for The Current War and Mary Magdalene

The Weinstein Company has made some adjustments to their forthcoming release calendar by moving around two of their features.

The Current War, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison, was previously announced to debut on December 22 and has moved up one month to November 24. In addition, Mary Magdalene has moved back from its August release date to March 30, 2018, Easter Weekend.

The Current War is the epic story of the cutthroat competition between the greatest inventors of the industrial age over whose electrical system would power the new century. Backed by J.P. Morgan, Edison dazzles the world by lighting Manhattan. But Westinghouse, aided by Nikola Tesla, has seen fatal flaws in Edison’s direct current design. Igniting a war of currents, Westinghouse and Tesla bet everything on risky and dangerous alternating current. The Current War also stars Tom Holland, Nicholas Hoult, Katherine Waterston, Tuppence Middleton, and Matthew Macfadyen.

Mary Magdalene is conceived to be an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to the capital city of Jerusalem. Written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, Mary Magdalene also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim.

Directed by DGA Award Winner Garth Davis (Lion) and produced by See-Saw Films’ Iain Canning (Lion, The King’s Speech) and Emile Sherman (Lion, The King’s Speech), Mary Magdalene is the latest collaboration from the team behind last year’s $140 million worldwide box office success and six-time Academy Award-nominated film Lion alongside Animal Kingdom producer Liz Watts.
