The Hitman’s Bodyguard Hits Mark with $21.6M in First Place

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson took over the box office this weekend as action-comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard (Lionsgate) debuted in first place with an estimated $21.6 million from 3,377 theaters, an average of $6,396 per location. Directed by Patrick Hughes, the R-rated film also stars Gary Oldman, Salma Hayek, Elodie Yung, Joaquim de Almeida, Kirsty Mitchell, and Richard E. Grant. The Hitman’s Bodyguard received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences and was made for $29 million.

After topping the box office last weekend, Annabelle: Creation (Warner Bros. Pictures) dropped to second place and 55.7% in tickets sales with $15.5 million. The two-week domestic total for the film, which cost just $15 million to make, is now $64 million. Internationally, Annabelle: Creation added $42 million from 13,209 screens in 56 markets to push its total to $96.7 million. The worldwide total is now $160.7 million. Directed by David F. Sandberg, Annabelle: Creation stars Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Lulu Wilson, Philippa Coulthard, Grace Fulton, Lou Lou Safran, Samara Lee, Tayler Buck, with Anthony LaPaglia, and Miranda Otto.

Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky (Bleecker Street) debuted in third place to $8 million from 3,031 theaters, an average of just $2,656 per location. It received a B CinemaScore. The $29 million film stars Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Seth MacFarlane, Riley Keough, Katie Holmes, Katherine Waterston, Dwight Yoakam, Sebastian Stan, Brian Gleeson, Jack Quaid, Hilary Swank, and Daniel Craig.

Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk (Warner Bros. Pictures) dropped two spots to fourth place but still added $6.7 million for a total of $165.5 million after five weeks in theaters. Dunkirk generated $8.4 million from 5,000 screens in 61 international markets this weekend, to take its overseas total to $227.2 million and global total to $392.7 million. The film has yet to open in markets like Italy (Aug. 31), China (Sept. 1), and Japan (Sept. 9). Made for $100 million, Dunkirk stars Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, and Tom Hardy.

Open Road Films’ The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature rounded out the top five with $5.1 million and has brought in $17.7 million after two weeks. Directed by Cal Brunker, the sequel is voiced by Will Arnett, Maya Rudolph, Jackie Chan, Katherine Heigl, and more.

Also of note is Warner Bros. Pictures’ Wonder Woman, which has now passed the $800 million mark worldwide with more than $404 million domestically and more than $396 million overseas. Wonder Woman has climbed to the 23rd spot on the all-time domestic box office list and is currently at No. 64 on the worldwide list. Made for $149 million, the Patty Jenkins-directed film stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, Connie Nielsen and Lucy Davis.
