Having already raked in over $270 million at the box office worldwide, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is now slated to receive a followup. The Hollywood Reporter has word that Warner Bros. has set director Brad Peyton and writers Brian and Mark Gunn to return for a third Jules Verne-inspired offering.
Journey 2, the sequel to 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, is in theaters now and stars Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzman and Kristen Davis. There’s no word yet on which actors will return for another adventure — especially given the disparate casts of the first two films — but the second does end with the suggestion that many are likely to reprise their roles.
Journey 3 is currently being targeted for release sometime in 2014.
