Conjuring 3 Brings Back James Wan & Screenwriter David Leslie Johnson

Good news today for fans of the Conjuring cinematic universe! According to Deadline, The Conjuring 3 has begun active development at Warner Bros. Pictures/New Line Cinema, with Conjuring 2 screenwriter David Leslie Johnson returning to write the threequel and series mastermind James Wan producing with Peter Safran. However, Wan is not expected to direct the third installment, which will once again follow real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Famiga).

Safran recently told CinemaBlend that Conjuring 3 would break the pattern of “another supernatural possession in a house with a family in peril.” Wan has also stated several times that the next film would take place in the 1980’s.

When we talked to Lorraine Warren in 2013 for the first movie, she mentioned England as a possible setting for a sequel (that came true), as well as another fascinating investigation she and Ed conducted in Japan.

“When we were in Japan investigating hauntings my husband’s health was very bad. I really didn’t know how bad it was until we got home,” Warren told Max Evry (via MTV) in 2013. “He would stay in a hotel and I would go with these Japanese people to these hauntings that were going on. Don’t ask me how I do it because I don’t know, I don’t have the answers, but I could communicate. I don’t speak the language. I did not have a translator! Even Ed would say, ‘I don’t know how you were able to do that.'”

The main Conjuring movies have served as a launching pad for several spin-off films, including the in-development Crooked Man movie, director Corin Hardy’s currently-shooting The Nun, starring Taissa Farmiga (We Have Always Lived in the Castle) and Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight), and the Annabelle films. The prequel film Annabelle: Creation hit theaters August 11, 2017.  The Conjuring films and the first Annabelle have already earned a combined $895 million worldwide with a combined budget of just $66.5 million across the three films.
