Wonder Woman Opens to a Powerful $228.1 Million Worldwide

Warner Bros. Pictures and DC FilmsWonder Woman opened to a powerful $100.5 million domestically from 4,165 theaters, for an average of $24,131 per location. $9 million of the the total came from 343 IMAX theaters. It marks the biggest opening of all time for a female director (Patty Jenkins), surpassing the previous record of $85 million set by Sam Taylor-Johnson for Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015 (it earned $93 million for the four-day Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day weekend). Costing about $149 million to make, Wonder Woman received a strong A CinemaScore from audiences.

Wonder Woman has earned an outstanding $122.5 million from 34,300 screens in 55 international markets, with $9.3 million of that figure coming from 665 overseas IMAX screens. That puts the worldwide total at $223 million after just six days of global release. Wonder Woman grossed $38 million from 16,000 screens in China alone – it marks the fourth-biggest Warner Bros. opening there ever.

UPDATE: Final figures show that Wonder Woman beat the above estimated figures with $103.1 million domestically and $125 million internationally, for a total of $228.1 million worldwide.

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot (The Fast and the Furious films, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Robin Wright (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Netflix‘s House of Cards), Danny Huston (Clash of the Titans, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Ewen Bremner (Exodus: Gods and Kings, Snowpiercer), Saïd Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Connie Nielsen (GladiatorNymphomaniac: Vol. I) and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead).

DreamWorks Animation’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie debuted in second place in North America with $23.5 million from 3,434 theaters, an average of $6,843. Directed by David Soren, the 20th Century Fox release features the voices of Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Nick Kroll, Thomas Middleditch, Jordan Peele, and Kristen Schaal.

In its second weekend, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales dropped two spots to third place with $21.6 million. The sequel has earned $114.6 million so far in North America. Overseas, Dead Men Tell No Tales is faring much better, bringing in another $73.8 million from 54 markets to take its international total to $386.6 million (with $142.6 million of that figure coming from China). The worldwide total is now $501.2 million after 12 days of global release. The previous installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, earned $241 million domestically and $804.6 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $1.045 billion. Directed by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales stars Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, Kevin R. McNally, Kaya Scodelario, Golshifteh Farahani, Stephen Graham, David Wenham and Geoffrey Rush. It cost $230 million to make.

On the success of Pirates of the Caribbean, The Walt Disney Studios surpassed the $2 billion mark internationally on June 4 – the eighth consecutive year the company has hit this milestone. This follows on the Studio’s $1 billion domestic and $3 billion global milestones last week. The current year-to-date totals are $1.155 billion domestic, $2.055 billion international, and $3.21 billion global.

Fourth place in North America belonged to Marvel StudiosGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which added $9.7 million for a domestic total of $355.5 million. Internationally, the sequel earned $4.4 million and has collected $461.1 million to bring its worldwide total to $816.6 million. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the fifth highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe release domestically, internationally and globally. Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was made for $200 million and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, and Kurt Russell.

Rounding out the top five was Paramount PicturesBaywatch, starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra, Jon Bass, Kelly Rohrbach, and Ilfenesh Hadera. Made for $69 million, the big-screen adaptation grossed $8.5 million for a two-week total of $41.7 million.

Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant (20th Century Fox) earned just $4 million its third weekend in sixth place. That puts the $97 million-budgeted film at $67.2 million so far. Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demian Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollet, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, Benjamin Rigby, Noomi Rapace, and James Franco.
