Deadline reports that Universal Pictures has attached Kevin Hart to star in an upcoming remake of The Great Outdoors, based on the 1988 film directed by Howard Deutch and written by John Hughes. Michael De Luca will produce the film with Hart which has a script by Randall Green, who recently penned Warner Bros.’ in-development Scooby-Doo movie.
The original The Great Outdoors starred John Candy as a Chicago man eager to enjoy a camping vacation with his family, only for his brother-in-law, played by Dan Aykroyd, to crash the event, resulting in Hughes’ trademark hilarity.
Hart can next be heard as the voice of George Beard in Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie on June 2, and will next appear in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle on December 20. Last year, Hart had a successful year at the box office as he starred in four different films. He starred in both Ride Along 2 and Central Intelligence which brought in $124 million and $216 million at the global box office respectively, debuted his third theatrically released stand-up special Kevin Hart: What Now? which nabbed $23 million domestically, and even lent his voice to The Secret Life of Pets, which brought in $875 million at the global box office.
