Last Jedi Director on the Title, Rey’s Parentage and the New Planet

When the Star Wars: The Last Jedi title was announced in January, fans all over the world started wondering if the “Last Jedi” was singular or plural (since Jedi can be either). We had mentioned that Star Wars: The Force Awakens specifically refers to “the last Jedi” as being Luke Skywalker, and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has now confirmed that is indeed the case. You can check out his comments in the video below.

The Last Jedi director was also asked whether Rey’s parentage will be addressed in the film. He said it will, but he was careful not to say too much as there will be lots of surprises, twists and turns in the movie.

And what about the new planet we see in the teaser trailer and that is pictured above? Rian Johnson tells EW that it’s called Crait.

“It’s way out there. It’s very remote. It’s uncharted,” he said, “it’s a mineral planet and so there are mines on it.” Johnson added that the white crust is salt. “The white dusting of salt over this red, ruby-ish mineral base.”

Crait is the site of an “an old rebel base there that’s now abandoned… It ends up playing a key role in the movie.” He said the Resistance fighters shown in the trailer “show up where they have to deal with a very pressing and immediate threat.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper) and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcoming back cast members Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John BoyegaLupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

The sequel is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in regular and IMAX theaters on December 15, 2017.
