New Regency in talks for Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Grasshopper Jungle

New Regency is in final talks to pick up Edgar Wright‘s adaptation of the lauded 2014 Andrew Smith YA novel Grasshopper Jungle, according to THR. The book was a 2015 Michael L. Printz Honor Book and winner of the 2014 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Fiction. Wright will direct the film, and Matt Tolmach (Rough NightJumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) will produce along with Wright’s producer partner Nira Park. The script was written by Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle).

Here is the official tagline for the Grasshopper Jungle: “In the small town of Ealing, Iowa, Austin and his best friend, Robby, have accidentally unleashed an unstoppable army. An army of horny, hungry, six-foot-tall praying mantises that only want to do two things. This is the truth. This is history. It’s the end of the world. And nobody knows anything about it. You know what I mean.”

The story is told through the main character Austin Szerba in Ealing, Iowa, who is struggling with sexual feelings for his best friend Robbie Brees and his girlfriend Shann Collins. In the midst of his sexual awakening, an army of praying mantises appear.

Grasshopper Jungle was previously at Sony. Wright is known for his work on the British series Spaced, as well as films like Shaun of the Dead, Hot FuzzThe World’s End and Scott Pilgrim vs. the WorldHe was in development for Marvel’s Ant-Man for years before leaving the project. His next film is the highly-anticipated Baby Driver, starring Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx and Kevin Spacey. Baby Driver will hit theaters on June 28, 2017.
